Dr Flynn is a graduate of the University of Queensland Medial School prior to commencing his internship at Gold Coast Hospital. Specialist obstetric and gynaecology training was undertaken both in Queensland and the United Kingdom and commenced specialist practice on the Gold Coast in 1997.

His professional interests include laparoscopic surgery and he was awarded the A.G.E.S travelling fellowship in laparoscopic surgery. The student text, "Examination Obstetrics and Gynaecology co-authored by Michael Flynn and Judith Goh is widely used in many university book lists. Fertility, Reproductive Technology and the association with Queensland Fertility Group has become a strong focus in his practice.
