Born and educated in Ireland, Dr O'Dowd arrived in Australia as a newly qualified doctor in 1975, and became an Australian citizen in 1980.

Obstetric and gynaecology training was initially at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane (1977) and subsequently in Ireland (1981) and London (1982-85), before returning to the Mater. He gained specialist qualifications of the English college (FRCOG) and Australian and New Zealand colleges (FRANZCOG).

Dr O'Dowd set up his private O&G practice on the Gold Coast in 1987. In 2000 Dr O'Dowd was a foundation member of what is now Fertility Gold Coast. Together with his FGC colleagues they have delivered a combined to of more than 15000 little Gold Coasters. Dr O'Dowd has personally delivered about 6000 Gold Coast babies! While busy as an obstetrician, Tim continues to run a busy gynaecology practice.

"Infertility was always a special interest of mine. Setting up our IVF unit was a wonderful experience. Infertility can be devastating for couples but some units seem too focussed on the process rather than the couple. At FGC we are especially mindful of the roller coaster that is IVF. We aim to pay particular attention to the needs of our patients at all times. When pregnancy is achieved, we are then able to continue antenatal care throughout the nine months until delivery of the baby. This joy is shared by all members of the Fertility Gold Coast IVF team. Very few IVF units offer this full spectrum of care."
